It is not enough to look at politics in a normal fashion any longer. For
many years the general public have been operating under the
assumption that genuine, real world policy decisions have been taking
place; these are the types of things that are not brought up in elections
- they are the day to day decisions that people of either party should be
making concerning the operation of the country.
Since people of both parties are almost always talking about other
things, then it would be easy to assume that the really important stuff is
getting taken care of no matter who is in charge. But as I look around
today, that is not what I see.
Take two very real problems that are fast approaching us, both of
which have been mentioned by people of both parties;
1 The long range financial health of the country.
This issue has been brought up, usually in the context of the Social
Security debate. However, the real issue of our economic troubles has
not been described accurately by politicians of either major party. Most
Americans know by now that Social Security is facing about a 4 trillion
dollar shortfall by the middle of the century; what most Americans don't
know is that Medicaid and Medicare are facing near a forty trillion dollar
shortfall, and it is going to start hitting us much quicker and much
harder than the Social Security shortfall; between that fact, the
mounting overseas debt held by people who do not necessarily have
our best interests at heart and our current spending policies we are
entering a more dangerous period in our economy than most people
realize. There will be more on this later.
2 The Energy Plan
President Bush said in the last State of the Union Address that we were
addicted to Middle East oil - not just the middle east, though. We are
addicted to oil from wherever we can get it.
It was refreshing to hear President Bush say that, but what has he
done about it since then? Almost every presidential race that I can
remember, one or both candidates has talked about the need to get off
of our oil addiction.
They have all done about what President Bush has done since he said
that we were addicted to oil - essentially nothing; through that
addiction, we are paying for our enemies' war efforts.
Make no mistake about that, and do not underestimate its importance.
There will be more coming on the oil problem and possible ways to
reconsider our energy position; it has been said before, by doomsayers
the world over throughout oils history.
But this is not your fathers oil crises, as Tom Friedman says - the
situation throughout the world is different than it ever has been and in
the end there will only be one way to win the energy war - to actually
do something about at the very least lessening our demand of and
addiction to fossil fuels.
